SUMMARY:The History and Future of Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Northwest African American Museum and Town Hall \nIn conversation with South Seattle Emerald’s Marcus Harrison Green\, Annette Gordon-Reed weaves together American history\, dramatic family chronicle\, and searing episodes of memoir chronicled in her book On Juneteenth. She recounts the origins of the date in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured since and explains how\, from the earliest presence of Black people in Texas\, African-Americans played an integral role in the state’s story. She demonstrates that the slave- and race-based economy not only defined the fractious era of Texas independence but indeed caused the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. Don’t miss this urgent program for an essential revision of conventional renderings of history\, one that starkly reminds us that the fight for equality is demanding and ongoing. Tickets $5.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Race\, Gender and Labor
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop presented by the SW WA Labor Council. \nParticipants of this workshop will explore the manifestations of racism within our workplaces and communities – grounded in the understanding that race and organized labor are inextricably bound. WSLC’s 2015 resolution on Race & Labor calls on unions to develop a robust counter-narrative to right-wing populism\, starting with a shared history and collective work of making racial justice central to our organizations and how labor allies can work together. We are also excited to host a family friendly space\, to encourage intergenerational conversations and solutions. \n\n\nAt the end of this workshop\, attendees will be able to \n1. Create and participate in “brave space” conversations with other union members\, coworkers and family members on race\, gender and most importantly – equity\n2. Define racism and identify the different manifestations inside and outside of the workplace\n3. Explore implicit\, unconscious bias and practice interrupting oppressive moments in small groups \n\n\nPlease reach out to your fellow union members and working people in our community and ask them to attend. The workshop will be family friendly so members can bring their spouses\, kids\, parents… anyone from their household is welcome to attend. \n\n\nWe’re looking forward to seeing you on Thursday\, June 3rd at 6:00 PM.  Don’t forget to register at http://bit.ly/SWWAworkshop

SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN: A SPECIAL BRIEFING FOR WORKING PEOPLE
DESCRIPTION:This is an event co-sponsored by our friends at the Oregon AFL-CIO: \nIn March\, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)\, a $1.9 trillion relief and stimulus bill to help fight the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our communities and our economy. The American Rescue Plan provides much needed support for working people\, families\, government agencies and more – including funding public health\, increasing workplace safety\, pension and healthcare relief (including fully subsidizing COBRA)\, and providing the necessary support for state\, local\, and tribal governments. The APRA is big and complex\, which is why we are hosting a panel discussion to explain how this historic legislation impacts you.

SUMMARY:Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by our friends at the UW Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies: \nA brilliant union organizer and a humorous orator\, Benjamin Fletcher (1890–1949) was a tremendously important and well-loved African American member of the IWW during its heyday. Fletcher helped found and lead Local 8 of the IWW’s Marine Transport Workers Industrial Union\, unquestionably the most powerful interracial union of its era\, taking a principled stand against all forms of xenophobia and exclusion. \nFor years\, acclaimed historian Peter Cole has carefully researched the life of Ben Fletcher\, painstakingly uncovering a stunning range of documents related to this extraordinary man. Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly is the most comprehensive look at Fletcher ever to be published. It includes a detailed biographical sketch of his life and history\, reminiscences by fellow workers who knew him\, a chronicle of the IWW’s impressive decade-long run on the Philadelphia waterfront in which Fletcher played a pivotal role\, and nearly all of his known writings and speeches\, thus giving Fletcher’s timeless voice another opportunity to inspire a new generation of workers\, organizers\, and agitators. \nSponsored by the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies at the University of Washington\, the Labor Archives of Washington\, BlackPast.Org\, the University of Washington History Department\, IWW Seattle Branch\, and ILWU Local 23.

SUMMARY:APALA Labor Town Hall on Anti-Asian Racism
DESCRIPTION:This event is from our friends at the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA): \nCelebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month by joining APALA for a Labor Town hall on Anti-Asian Racism! Wednesday\, May 12th @ 12pm PT / 3pm ET. We encourage all labor leaders and allies to attend. \nHow can we build a labor movement that is inclusive of Asian American workers and that fights to end anti-Asian racism with the same fervor as we fight for workers’ rights? How do we commit our leadership and each member to recognize anti-Asian racism in our unions historically and now\, and commit to stop treating Asian American workers as disposable\, as perpetual foreigners\, or as invisible? \nAsian and Asian American workers in the U.S. have faced enormous challenges over the past year: deaths and poor health due to COVID-19\, high unemployment\, and now\, most visible to the public: anti-Asian racism. But anti-Asian racism has a long history in the United States\, and many institutions\, including the labor movement\, need to recognize their own history of discrimination toward people of color. The racism\, xenophobia\, and misogyny that fueled the recent shooting of Asian women in Atlanta stem from the targeted discrimination against Asians and Asian Americans\, and we need to talk about how workers are impacted. How can we build a labor movement that is inclusive of all workers of color and that fights to end racism with the same fervor as we fight for workers’ rights? How do we all commit to recognize racism in every facet of our society and commit to stop treating Asian American workers as disposable\, as perpetual foreigners\, or as invisible? Join this town hall to hear examples from leaders across the labor movement and pledge to build a more equitable labor movement for all workers. \nJoin us to build the change we want to see in the labor movement\, toward a vision of inclusion and justice for all workers.
