SUMMARY:#RaceAndFemicide
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation \nWomen of color live at the crossroads of racial and gendered oppression\, with dire consequences. We see this in the alarming rise of violence against trans Black women\, with each year becoming deadlier than the one prior and 96% of trans folk murdered being trans feminine people. We also see this in the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes\, of which 68% target Asian women. For many women\, the violence is also felt close to home: the CDC estimates that 53% of all female victims of homicide were killed by an intimate partner\, and Black women were the most likely to die at the hands of a partner. Native American women follow with the second highest incidence rate. \nJoin us for a conversation among organizers and leaders addressing gendered and racialized violence in our communities: from the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous and Black women\, to targeted attacks against Asian women\, to ongoing violence against trans and gender non-conforming people\, to the trafficking of immigrant women. \n#RaceAnd Femicide will ground us on the roots of femicide\, as well as its present day manifestations. Participants will also explore steps we can take as a collective society to find transformative solutions that do not perpetuate violence and further criminalize people\, but rather get to the root causes of femicide. Join us on April 14th at 3 PM/ET to learn how the issue is impacting our different communities and how we can combat it.

SUMMARY:Seattle Works: Center Pro-Blackness in Your Anti-Racism Work
DESCRIPTION:This is an event from Seattle Works: \n“The Seattle Works white caucus is is for white people to take part in anti-oppression work in a way that’s useful rather than destructive or distracting. We caucus to process feelings\, retrain ourselves\, and take action to dismantle racism and shift power to people who identify as Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Color (BIPOC). We are committed to following the leadership of and being accountable to BIPOC staff members at Seattle Works and the Seattle Works’ BIPOC Link-up\, including bringing their asks for topics\, learning\, and action to the white caucus. We are using “How to Plan a White Caucus Agenda” by Pippi Kessler to inform how we plan and structure our meetings. \nEach session will focus on a different topic\, which will be shared in the reminder email sent just before the caucus. \nBuilding community and developing leaders are tenants of the Seattle Works mission; we hope you will join us! \nWe are recording the educational and large group discussions to build accountability to our BIPOC colleagues and ensure conversations in an all-white space are truly centering BIPOC and racial justice. You may still attend if you do not consent to being recorded\, but please mute your sound and turn off your video during the educational and large group discussion times.”

SUMMARY:Race and Labor Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this special workshop with the Washington State Labor Council’s (WSLC) April Sims and Cherika Carter on Race and Labor. Description from the presenters below: \nParticipants of this workshop will explore the manifestations of racism within our workplaces and communities – grounded in the understanding that race and organized labor are inextricably bound. WSLC’s 2015 resolution on Race & Labor calls on unions to develop a robust counter-narrative to right-wing populism\, starting with a shared history and collective work of making racial justice central to our organizations and how labor allies can work together. \n\n\nThis workshop is presented as part of the Washington State Labor Council ‘s (WSLC) racial justice program as outlined by WSLC Convention Resolutions. Our working definition: Racism is a system of oppression\, designed to divide the working class\, so the wealthy elite can consolidate their wealth and power at the very top. \nPlease register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvd-uvrzwvGtP_oQd3p7CjxbfDhwcKYdL3

\nPlease register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAvce-hpzwpGtSip1RZlkZGFPRUGleMA9ri.

SUMMARY:The History and Future of Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Northwest African American Museum and Town Hall \nIn conversation with South Seattle Emerald’s Marcus Harrison Green\, Annette Gordon-Reed weaves together American history\, dramatic family chronicle\, and searing episodes of memoir chronicled in her book On Juneteenth. She recounts the origins of the date in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured since and explains how\, from the earliest presence of Black people in Texas\, African-Americans played an integral role in the state’s story. She demonstrates that the slave- and race-based economy not only defined the fractious era of Texas independence but indeed caused the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. Don’t miss this urgent program for an essential revision of conventional renderings of history\, one that starkly reminds us that the fight for equality is demanding and ongoing. Tickets $5.

SUMMARY:Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by our friends at the UW Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies: \nA brilliant union organizer and a humorous orator\, Benjamin Fletcher (1890–1949) was a tremendously important and well-loved African American member of the IWW during its heyday. Fletcher helped found and lead Local 8 of the IWW’s Marine Transport Workers Industrial Union\, unquestionably the most powerful interracial union of its era\, taking a principled stand against all forms of xenophobia and exclusion. \nFor years\, acclaimed historian Peter Cole has carefully researched the life of Ben Fletcher\, painstakingly uncovering a stunning range of documents related to this extraordinary man. Ben Fletcher: The Life and Times of a Black Wobbly is the most comprehensive look at Fletcher ever to be published. It includes a detailed biographical sketch of his life and history\, reminiscences by fellow workers who knew him\, a chronicle of the IWW’s impressive decade-long run on the Philadelphia waterfront in which Fletcher played a pivotal role\, and nearly all of his known writings and speeches\, thus giving Fletcher’s timeless voice another opportunity to inspire a new generation of workers\, organizers\, and agitators. \nSponsored by the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies at the University of Washington\, the Labor Archives of Washington\, BlackPast.Org\, the University of Washington History Department\, IWW Seattle Branch\, and ILWU Local 23.

SUMMARY:APALA Labor Town Hall on Anti-Asian Racism
DESCRIPTION:This event is from our friends at the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA): \nCelebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month by joining APALA for a Labor Town hall on Anti-Asian Racism! Wednesday\, May 12th @ 12pm PT / 3pm ET. We encourage all labor leaders and allies to attend. \nHow can we build a labor movement that is inclusive of Asian American workers and that fights to end anti-Asian racism with the same fervor as we fight for workers’ rights? How do we commit our leadership and each member to recognize anti-Asian racism in our unions historically and now\, and commit to stop treating Asian American workers as disposable\, as perpetual foreigners\, or as invisible? \nAsian and Asian American workers in the U.S. have faced enormous challenges over the past year: deaths and poor health due to COVID-19\, high unemployment\, and now\, most visible to the public: anti-Asian racism. But anti-Asian racism has a long history in the United States\, and many institutions\, including the labor movement\, need to recognize their own history of discrimination toward people of color. The racism\, xenophobia\, and misogyny that fueled the recent shooting of Asian women in Atlanta stem from the targeted discrimination against Asians and Asian Americans\, and we need to talk about how workers are impacted. How can we build a labor movement that is inclusive of all workers of color and that fights to end racism with the same fervor as we fight for workers’ rights? How do we all commit to recognize racism in every facet of our society and commit to stop treating Asian American workers as disposable\, as perpetual foreigners\, or as invisible? Join this town hall to hear examples from leaders across the labor movement and pledge to build a more equitable labor movement for all workers. \nJoin us to build the change we want to see in the labor movement\, toward a vision of inclusion and justice for all workers.

DESCRIPTION:This is presented by the Oregon Labor Education Resource Center: \nRacism\, Austerity\, and the Public Good: The Anti-Racist Imperative for Public Sector Unions\nDaniel Hosang\,  Associate Professor of Ethnicity\, Race & Migration at Yale University \nDecades of attacks on public goods and services and demands for austerity and ‘taxpayer rights’ have had an enduring impact\, evident in public ambivalence towards raising taxes and revenues and funding vital public services.
