SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Race\, Gender and Labor
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop presented by the SW WA Labor Council. \nParticipants of this workshop will explore the manifestations of racism within our workplaces and communities – grounded in the understanding that race and organized labor are inextricably bound. WSLC’s 2015 resolution on Race & Labor calls on unions to develop a robust counter-narrative to right-wing populism\, starting with a shared history and collective work of making racial justice central to our organizations and how labor allies can work together. We are also excited to host a family friendly space\, to encourage intergenerational conversations and solutions. \n\n\nAt the end of this workshop\, attendees will be able to \n1. Create and participate in “brave space” conversations with other union members\, coworkers and family members on race\, gender and most importantly – equity\n2. Define racism and identify the different manifestations inside and outside of the workplace\n3. Explore implicit\, unconscious bias and practice interrupting oppressive moments in small groups \n\n\nPlease reach out to your fellow union members and working people in our community and ask them to attend. The workshop will be family friendly so members can bring their spouses\, kids\, parents… anyone from their household is welcome to attend. \n\n\nWe’re looking forward to seeing you on Thursday\, June 3rd at 6:00 PM.  Don’t forget to register at http://bit.ly/SWWAworkshop

SUMMARY:The History and Future of Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Northwest African American Museum and Town Hall \nIn conversation with South Seattle Emerald’s Marcus Harrison Green\, Annette Gordon-Reed weaves together American history\, dramatic family chronicle\, and searing episodes of memoir chronicled in her book On Juneteenth. She recounts the origins of the date in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured since and explains how\, from the earliest presence of Black people in Texas\, African-Americans played an integral role in the state’s story. She demonstrates that the slave- and race-based economy not only defined the fractious era of Texas independence but indeed caused the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. Don’t miss this urgent program for an essential revision of conventional renderings of history\, one that starkly reminds us that the fight for equality is demanding and ongoing. Tickets $5.
